Functionality and toughness were major selling points in advertisements when this watch was new. The beautiful yellow colored lume pairs with the dial color very well and gives the watch a look you don't see too often. It also has an usual maroon colored dial that matches the little yacht-timing section of the minutes sub-dial nicely. The watch features a rotating bezel, a tachymeter scale, a yachting timer, and an extremely robust "water shock resistant" stainless-steel case. Croton released their Super Chronomaster in the 1970s as a follow-up to the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver that you may recall, as we've offered a few of these "supers" before.
This model is known as the Super Chronomaster. The example we have this week features an unusual case shape. The Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver was made in countless case, dial, and movement variations throughout its production run. Due to slightly similar names, a battle played out in court from 1939 to 1953 resulting in Croton stepping in as the US distributor of Nivada watches, branded simply Croton or Croton Nivada Grenchen. By the time Nivada decided to make a push into the American market, Movado, a direct competitor, was well established as a leading Swiss watchmaker. distributor of Nivada-manufactured timepieces it was a partnership started out of necessity. Best known today for its Chronomaster, the brand has a much richer history than it often gets credit for. Original and correct unpainted small hands, replaced red seconds chronograph hand.Time and time again, we're ecstatic to offer Croton's do-it-all Chronomaster, and this one is a bit later in the product run, featuring a striking maroon dial.ĭating back to 1878, the Croton Watch Company was founded in New York City and operated near the Westchester County suburb of Croton-on-Hudson for much of its run. Acrylic crystal is good, while the attractive black dial has some fading and marks, with aged creamy tritium indicators and matching hands. Original crown, new (correct) large pushers. Bezel is very good, with expected wear, turns smoothly. Case back looks to have been previously polished, script is still thick and legible. Thick with sharp lines, some expected marks of wear. Movement has been fully serviced and keeps accurate time. We have pared it with a hazel Saffiano leather Molequin strap to accentuate its handsome design while at the same time paying homage to its utilitarian roots. Since these were outdoor tool watches, finding a good condition Chronomaster can be difficult, but our example today is in spectacular condition, with a superb dial, lume aged to perfection, and a thick, unpolished case with clean bezel. Reference 107 that we have in the shop today comes with the sturdy Landeron 248 movement preferred by Croton in the North American market from 1966 onward. The Chronomaster was produced with a variety of different movements. Croton/Nivada pushed these features by advertising the watch to the “athletic-minded and the enterprising” and for “versatile” buyers who were “at the centre of events”. CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY AND APPRAISALįirst produced in 1961 under a partnership between Swiss company Nevada SA and American manufacturer Croton Watch Co., the Chronomaster has exploded in popularity in recent years.Īrguably one of the finest, most versatile tool chronographs from the 1960s, its complicated name (Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver) reflects a vast number of functions, from chronograph with tachymeter scale and a sailing regatta countdown, to 200m water resistance and a rotating dive bezel, and even a second time zone (on the bezel).
